Course registration ("Belegen")

The most important steps and information on course registration can be found in this information sheet.

Please note that course registration is not the same as exam registration; course registration takes place before the beginning of term (there are two registration periods, see below); exams have to be registered for separately near the end of the term. Course registration does NOT entitle you to participate in exams, but additional exam registration is essential.

When can I register for classes?

  • there are two registration periods, an earlier one (1. Belegzeitraum / "vorgezogene Belegfrist") and a later one  (2. Belegzeitraum /"Hauptbelegfrist")
    • classes which require preparation (e.g. reading) during the term break are usually registered for in the earlier registration period
    • alle other classes are registered for in the later registration period
  • the dates for the current registration periods can be found here and in LSF: Course Catalogue > Faculty of Languages and Literatures > Englische Philologie
  • in LSF, you can see for every class in which registration period it is registered for (see section "Anmeldung" in the details on the respective class)
  • When exactly you register within the defined registration periods does not have any influence on your chances to get a place (i.e., it is NOT "first come –first served")
  • places that are not filled during the first registration period will be offered in the second registration period
  • if there are still places left after the end of the second registration period, they will be offered during registration for leftover places.

How does registration work?

  • there are some exceptions (e.g. the ICP modules). If exceptional registration procedures apply, this is noted and explained in the details on these classes in LSF (section "Anmeldung")
  • You can only register if you have successfully reregistered for the upcoming term at LMU ("Rückmeldung") and have a valid LMU/Campus ID
important information for first semester students: please contact studienberatung@anglistik.uni-muenchen.de if you have not received your LMU/Campus ID (i.e. cannot log in to LSF) when the second registration period starts. If this happens, please do not worry, we always have some additional places in beginners' classes for such (exceptional) cases.

How do I know which classes I need to register for?

  • please consult the section on your study programme on the Anglistik-website; the following documents will help you plan your semester:
    • the Checklist
    • the examination and study regulations (Prüfungs- und Studienordnung), in particular the table at the end of this document
  • in case of questions, please contact the study advisory team

What do I have to pay special attention to?

entry requirements for modules

  • this does not apply in the MA English Studies
  • for all other study programmes: please consult the section "Zulassungsvoraussetzungen" in the A-Z on your study programme on the Anglistik-website

One joint exam for several module parts

  • this does not apply in the MA English Studies
for all other study programmes: please consult the section "Modulprüfungen" in the A-Z on your study programme on the Anglistik-website

compulsory elective modules (WPs)

  • please read the checklist and/or the examination and study regulations to find out about selection rules and possible combination restrictions
  • modules and module packages with several parts need to be completed: The selection of one part of a module package (e.g. WP 1) or module part (e.g. WP 5.1) obliges you to complete this module package (e.g. Package 1) or module (e.g. WP 5) in the course of your studies! Selection of a modul or module package is binding and irreversible: once you have registered for an exam in one part of a module package or (multi-)module, you absolutely need to complete the package or module in the course of your studies.
  • additional special regulation in the MA English Studies: Profile modules WP 18 to 23 and WP 32 to 37 (= Module Packages 4-9) offered by the English Department may not be combined with modules from the Gemeinsamen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Profilbereich (GGSP) and vice versa; i.e. once you have chosen (i.e. registered for an exam in) a GGSP module, you can no longer select from Profile Modules 4‐9 and vice versa.
  • the GGSP modules offfered by the English Department (all modules in the GGSP starting with WP Ang) may NOT be taken by students who major in the MA English Studies
Please note that LSF does NOT warn you about violations of selection rules during course registration but WILL block exam registration at the end of term. Please make sure that you do not violate any selection rules or restrictions during course registration to avoid that you take classes for which you cannot get credits in the end.
