Ireland - then and now: a cultural journey

Course E:  Carty  Di 14-16

The perception of Ireland as a poor, erratic nation on the fringe of Europe has given way to new picture of an affluent and dynamic society. In this course, we will explore the many ways Ireland has developed and manifested itself, between tradition and modernity since 1921. Besides providing a general review of basic facts, North and South, we will cover a wide range of topics such as Irish newspapers and TV, education in the North and South and in the UK, the challenges of immigration, Hiberno-English, the Irish language, Gaelic sports, and Celtic mythology. Emphasis will be placed on discussion and group work. You will be required to give a presentation and to write a short essay on an aspect of your presentation.
